On Friday, 13th December, Thriving Communities held a successful Volunteer Gathering at Llanbradach Community Centre (Caerphilly), bringing together new and existing volunteers to celebrate compassion, connection, and shared purpose.
Although many of our existing volunteers were unable to attend due to other commitments during this busy festive season, we were delighted to welcome 10 enthusiastic new volunteers, alongside 4 existing volunteers. The event was made even more special by the presence of Hefin David MS (Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly) and his assistant, Laura Green, Community Engagement Officer.
The meeting kicked off with an overview of Thriving Communities (its scope and aspirations) and with a warm round-table introduction session, where attendees shared their personal stories, creating an atmosphere of openness, belonging, and mutual support. A heartfelt theme emerged during these discussions: no matter our background or personal circumstances, everyone has faced adversity in life. Both Hefin David and Laura Green shared their own challenges, inspiring the group by highlighting how overcoming hardship can foster compassion and a profound capacity to uplift and help others.
This message resonated deeply with everyone present. The gathering emphasised that belonging, connection, and meaning are universal human needs—and it’s these very needs that Thriving Communities strives to fulfil through its work. By facilitating group connections, activities, and a shared sense of purpose, Thriving Communities cultivates a thriving network of individuals committed to supporting one another and their local communities.
The event concluded with a celebratory lunch, where new and existing volunteers mingled, built friendships, and strengthened bonds. The conversations were filled with optimism and a collective eagerness to contribute to positive change.
