Burnham-on-Sea: Where Tranquility Meets Adventure

Start your day in the serene town of Burnham-on-Sea, famous for its long stretches of sandy beaches and unique lighthouses. Wander along the shore, marvel at the historic Low Lighthouse on its stilts, and breathe in the fresh sea air. Here are some highlights you won’t want to miss:

  • Burnham Beach: One of the longest stretches of glorious golden sand in Europe – seven miles in total! Perfect for a leisurely walk, building sandcastles, or simply lounging under the summer sun (let’s be optimistic).
  • Burnham Pier: Experience the charm of the UK’s shortest pier with its quaint eateries and fun arcade games.
  • Brean Down: Take a short drive to this stunning natural promontory offering breathtaking views over the Bristol Channel.
  • Apex Leisure & Wildlife Park: Enjoy a peaceful stroll around the lakes, spot local wildlife, and relax in the beautiful park surroundings.

Weston-super-Mare: A Classic British Seaside Experience

Next, we’ll whisk you away to the lively town of Weston-super-Mare, where excitement and entertainment await at every turn:

  • Grand Pier: Dive into a world of amusement with thrilling rides, laser and crystal mazes, bustling arcades, and delicious food – an iconic spot for all ages.
  • Weston Beach: Traditional seaside fun with donkey rides, golden sands, and the best fish and chips in town.
  • Weston Helicopter Museum: Visit the largest dedicated helicopter collection in the world with over 80 exhibits on display in an all-weather hangar. The collection covers civilian and military machines. Exhibits include the Queen’s Flight helicopter and the Westland Lynx that still holds the helicopter world speed record of 249mph.
  • Upfest Weston Wallz: This is one of the biggest and best outdoor galleries of street art in the South West.
  • Banksy’s Pinwheel: Banksy’s iconic pinwheel is on display in Weston’s museum. This seven-foot structure was part of his iconic Dismaland exhibition.
  • Weston Museum: Visit a museum with a difference, delve into local history and culture through engaging, interactive exhibits. For example, try on a swimming hat, similar to the one worn by Weston’s four-times Olympic gold medallist Paulo Radmilovic or you can step inside Clara’s Cottage – a full Victorian re-incarnation.
  • Water Adventure Play Park: Watch the kids splash and play in this fantastic water park, perfect for a summer’s day.
  • Knightstone Island: A tranquil spot connected to the mainland through a limestone causeway, ideal for a peaceful stroll with stunning sea views.
  • Marine Lake: Enjoy swimming and paddle boating in this charming, sheltered lake in a small sandy cove near Knightstone Island. It was refurbished in 2022 and offers permanent sea-water bathing even when the tide is out. You might not know that Weston-super-Mare has the second highest tidal range in the world, so the sea does go a long way out at low tide. Marine Lake’s water is replenished every day by the natural high tides and is kept in place by sluices, so there is always water.
  • Optional Entertainment: Daytime disco 2pm or Extravaganza II Free music concert at 3pm.

As we travel between these two delightful towns, you’ll be treated to scenic coastal views, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destinations.
